Mixed Emotions Tour - Corn Exchange, King's Lynn - Tuesday 22nd June 1999
A review by Sharon Howling

At very short notice Beverley managed to attract an audience of only 200-ish at the King's Lynn Corn exchange, I personally only found out about it from being there the previous week and seeing a poster. Despite the small crowd there was still a good atmosphere.

As usual Beverley sang beautifully with just her piano, her voice, a guitar player, bass player and saxophonist on stage. the songs were a good mix of old and new with the majority of songs being from her new album. These sounded great live as you had the added benefit of hearing the real emotion of a live performance.

Before each song Beverley told us a little about the song itself, who it was about and why it was written, this helped to put the words into perspective. She is not one of these stars who sits chatting for ages, she just kept knocking the songs out one after another with a total of 25 plus songs throughout the evening. it was great. She played all my favourites with the exception of Castle in the Clouds from the first album and she only missed two songs off the new album. I would strongly recommend getting the new album before attending, I did and it made it better to hear recorded before live performance in my opinion.

The new album itself is full of emotions (hence the title) and you can really tell Beverley has been in these situations or relates to them very well, as usual she sings about friends and family and shows her devotion to those around her through her words. The harmonies are great too.

The best part for me was meeting her backstage - through some twist of fate we managed to meet her and spend 5 to 10 minutes chatting with her alone. She is very approachable and "normal". She is very interested in people and appreciates feedback about her music, she even gave my other half (fiancé) some piano tips for his own playing.

All in all a very enjoyable evening that even bought my mother-in-law to be very close to tears with the heartfelt words and emotion of "Afraid of letting go"

I would recommend everyone to go and see her if you enjoyed her first or second album. She is definitely back as though she had never been away.
