Mixed Emotions Tour - Ronnie Scott's, Birmingham - 7th July 1999
A review from the Express & Star newspaper

A memorable hot night of . . . despair
By Paul Kemp

With a long repertoire of beautiful and moody, yet sometimes depressing, songs, Beverley Craven gave an impressive performance last night. The singer, who started off a little nervously at first, sang songs from her old and new albums to a packed house - and went down a storm. She sang some of her more obscure melodies from her old albums, and plugged her new album with more sad songs. And with witty, but sometimes mumbled, verbal interludes Beverley explained her songs were about friendship break-ups, relationship heartbreaks, her children - and even one about her dog.

Her penultimate song was her most famous hit Promise Me, to cheers from the audience.
But unsually her encore was a lesser known - and the most depressing - song from her first album titled I Listen to the Rain. The song is a personal favourite of mine, but clearly was not as well known to the audience.

One criticism of her songs could be that they all sound very much the same - they're all unhappy, despairing songs, with the same sort of melodies. But there are some very beautiful songs in there also.
Ronnie Scott's was far too hot and smoky, but provided that perfect intimacy between the star and the audience - a memorable performance.
